ScourStop creates a new paradigm.
ScourStop transition mat is a biotechnical replacement for hard armor. It is a mechanically-anchored 4 ft. X 4 ft. X .5 inch semi-rigid, polymer mat designed with voids throughout the structure which enable vegetative growth. Transition mats provide mechanical protection over highly erosive areas; like stormwater pipe outfalls, curb outfalls, over-flow structures, and shorelines. Transition mats provide protection against much higher shear stress and velocities than vegetation alone or rock rip rap; and are comparable in performance to Articulated Concrete Blocks.

TRANSITION MAT

A transition mat is a bio-technical replacement for hard armor. It is a mechanically anchored 4ft. X 4ft. X .5 in. semi-rigid polymer mat designed with voids throughout the structure with enable vegetative growth. Transition mats provide mechanical protection over highly erosive area; like stormwater pipe-outfalls, curb outfalls, over-flow structures, and shorelines. Transition mats provide resistance against much higher shear stress and velocities than vegetation alone or rock rip rap; and are comparable in performance to Articulated Concrete Blocks.

Transition mats must be used over another soil cover, such as: 1) sod 2) sod and turf reinforcement mat combinations (TRMs) or 3) hybrid TRMs such as: High-Performance turf reinforcement mats (HP-TRMs) or geotextile/TRM combinations. Soil covers protect the erosive soil, and transition mats protect the soil covers. Vegetation provides many aesthetic, functional, and synergistic benefits, but is not required for performance. Site goals and environment generally dictate soil cover options.

Specified anchors are essential to performance. An average of 8 anchors per mat (minimum 'hold-down' capacity 130 pounds per anchor) conform the mats to the soil profile, and secure the mats to the soil in a uniform manner. Transition mats weigh approximately 1 pound per sq. ft. - about 10 times less than hard armor practices; but provide approximately70 pounds per sq. ft. of 'ballast' or 'hold-down' capacity – about 7 times more than hard armor.

ScourStop is formulated with a 10 year, UV Protection coloring it a dark green. ScourStop is comprised of a very stable polymer, and will minimally degrade over time in the sunlight. However, once vegetated, the mat is mostly shielded from the sun and undetectable. ScourStop also utilizes recycled materials and thus a product providing LEED points.

ScourStop – a permanent, post-construction Stormwater Treatment Practice (STP) Facilities a vegetated stormwater conveyance system that promotes infiltration for groundwater recharge and pollutant collection. Minimizes maintenance of post construction requirements for NPDES II rule #5.

This erosion control system has two areas of concern:

One area of concern includes high-stress areas (like a pipe outfall or the toe of a slope).

The second is the downstream area.

SCOURSTOP TECHNOLOGY

ScourStop is a system withing itself and a part of a larger engineered system required at every potential scour area. ScourStop is a Best Management Practices (BMP) utilized at higher stress areas- such as pipe outfalls, over-flow structures and shorelines.

The Pre-Phase II, many designers ignored the balance of the system- NOW that practice is no longer acceptable, nor desired. The engineered system approach enables designers to create a site reflecting goals set by the owner, regulatory people, or land-use limitations.

ScourStop technology enables site design for specific goals- such as:

  • filtering runoff pollutants
  • bio-retention
  • groundwater recharge
  • minimizing Right-of-Way (ROW) requirements
  • site limitations
  • installation challenges
  • natural landscapes
  • aesthetics

Many of these choices are not available or applicable to hard armor practices.

ScourStop performs different protection functions for different applications. For stormwater outfalls, transition mats provide early mechanical protection, and over time, additional vegetation reinforcement. For shoreline protection, transition mats act as a extremely effective 'ballast' securing geotextile and mechanical protection against wave energy.
